Background

The following error can occur which prevents packages from installing with VIPM. The error is Error 8 (which is a file permission error) with an Error Source of "Open/Create/Replace File" when trying to access a spec file in the "C:\ProgramData\JKI\VIPM\cache" folder (as shown below).

Details

The problem is that VIPM does not have permission to overwrite this file (the file permissions may have gotten set to only allow Administrators to modify it). This may have happened when VIPM was running as Administrator, which sometimes users do.  We're looking into a long-term fix for this issue.  In the meantime, you should be able to resolve this issue by following the workaround, below.

Workaround

You should be able to resolve this issue by manually deleting the offending file -- for example, in the error dialog shown above, you would delete the "C:\ProgramData\JKI\VIPM\cache\mgi_lib_tree-1.0.4.4.spec" file. Windows may ask you to confirm this if it requires elevated/administrator priviledges.
